Pagans Supporting Islam and Religious Freedom: What You Can Do Locally

Share

I won't spend a lot of time repeating what so many of us have been saying in outrage to the Florida minister's scheduled book burning on Saturday. Instead, I wanted to share some comments about what some leaders in our community have been saying, and also send you information about something you can do locally to spread the vibes of peace and understanding.

"Pagans know that when politics and public discourse descend to a hate-fest of blame and condemnation, we could be next. And as someone born Jewish just six years after the defeat of the Nazis, when you start burning books and demonizing religions, I start asking, "When will you be coming for me?"
-Starhawk

"This Saturday, to honor the memory of those who died in the toppling of the World Trade Centers in NYC, and further, to honor the memory of those who died on September 11, 1944 when Darmstadt, Germany was destroyed in preparation for the more famous Dresden bombing, I say let us organize to send whatever we can afford – be it prayers, energy, or money – to Pakistan. Let us feed the three to six million who have not yet received food or medical care. Let us not let the likes of Terry Jones win this day. In the name of all who are Compassionate and Merciful, let us not give up on humanity."

Let us turn our attention on 9/11 to sending love, light, and support to our human-allies in the Middle East. Below are details for a Drumming for Peace event that I hope you can attend on Saturday. If you can't make it, RSVP to this global facebook event set up by Morpheus Ravenna.

Drumming for Peace
Saturday, 9/11
7:30 to 9:30 pm in Room 116
Owen Brown Interfaith Center in Columbia MD

Join Turning Circle of UUCC as we honor this important date and make good
medicine drumming in sacred space. Using our voices, drums, rattles, and
percussion toys, we will drum for peace and connect in community!

All levels of drummers from beginners to advanced are most welcome to add
their voice to the circle. Bring your own drums and rattles, or come and
borrow ours! Food or drink to share for revels afterwards is greatly
appreciated.

We¹ll also be gathering money donations for the Central Asia Institute
a group that builds schools, and community resources for impoverished towns
in the middle east.
