Connect DC Samhain: That which has passed is not forgotten...

Connect DC celebrated Samhain on Sunday, November 6 at the Reflections Temple in Northwest DC. Always a straightforward but beautiful ritual, this Samhain celebration aims not just to remember the year's dead and others who have passed on, but to honor the year's newborns, as well.

It is important to remember that Samhain marks endings and new beginnings. Leaves fall from the trees, so that there can be new growth. When we lose things or when situations in our lives end, new opportunities usually follow. This is the cycle of life.

In sacred space, the cauldron was filled as the names of the Beloved Dead were read, emptied, and filled again to remind us of this circle that is life. Those present were also reminded that we should not weep for those who have passed, but live for ourselves. The best way to preserve life is to live it and enjoy it fully.

Finally, as the cauldron was refilled, the names of the year's newborns were read. The feeling of new growth was palpable. Food and fellowship followed the ritual, and it was a very lively gathering.

For the first time in my life, Samhain this year actually felt like a New Year's celebration. I can feel things stirring and changing as if in Spring. May we all see positive change in the New Year!

  1. It was great to be there and celebrate with such awesome witches/pagans/friends. Thanks to Katrina, Connect DC and Reflections for hosting such a profound ritual every year.

  2. Each year we pass out bags of lentils from the ritual to encourage folks to partake in the rebirth of the season. I hope you all get a chance to get a taste of the magic in a stew near you.
