Last night I was able to attend a very unique concert with several other Pagans at the historic All Souls Unitarian Church in Columbia Heights. The show was by a very unique hiphop artist, not at all typical for the genre. MC Yogi kicked off his Pilgrimage tour here in the District with a 90 minute set that included music from his latest album (under the same name) as well as some of his smash hits such as Rock on Hanuman, Ganesh is Fresh, and Give Love.

As you could probably guess from the song titles, MC Yogi is a unique artist because he sings about themes from yogic philosophy and Hinduism. A leading artist in the genre of kirtan (Hindu devotional music) as well, MC Yogi blends the two in a way that appeals to generations looking for more lively ways to connect into their spirituality.

As followers of both Hinduism and Paganism continue to rise dramatically in the United States, so too does the cross-pollination of interest among their adherents. This show was a perfect example of that. The room was packed with an interesting mix of yogi's and Witches alike as everyone danced together to the jams. To me this was an interfaith experience for the next generation. I believe that one day, interfaith events wont consist of just older clergy members sitting uncomfortably in a room together. I believe that some day work like this will be expressed through things like shared music, culture, and values.
